From microchips and software to biotech and industrial equipment, San Diego’s technology industry is as vast as it is diverse. But there’s one thing that all tech-oriented businesses have in common: they need writers and editors to make sense of the tech-speak for a variety of end users.

To help us explore the local tech landscape, three seasoned technical editors and writers, Sara Feldman, Mark Fogg, and Elizabeth Gray, will join us for a special panel discussion. Fielding questions from a moderator and attendees, they will each discuss how they became technical writers and editors, the various tech industries and opportunities in San Diego, how one would go about breaking into the field, potential opportunities for contract work, and more.

Sara Feldman has 10 years of experience as a technical writer, primarily in the software industry and focused on online support. She earned her BS in Technical Communication and Communication Studies from James Madison University. Sara is currently the VP of Programs for the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication.

For the past 20 years, Mark Fogg has worked exclusively at Solar Turbines, where he has served as senior technical editor and ghostwritten everybody from struggling technical writers to executives. Before that, he worked at smaller commercial companies and in the defense industry, where he had to write to very rigid military specifications.

Currently an independent contractor, Elizabeth Gray worked as a senior technical writer/editor for Cubic Corporation for more than 15 years, broken up by a five-year stint at Qualcomm. She has over 15 years’ experience in publications development and operations and at one time worked in defense and held Secret-SAR security clearance.
