Adios, Topica |
|
Pat Ray, our chapter e-mail list coordinator, recently sent a message to all of the remaining Topica list subscribers to let them know that the list is now defunct. The list has proven itself to be unreliable a few too many times, and more often than not, my messages to the Topica subscribers are not actually delivered, as was the case in December when I sent out a meeting reminder. Ironically, the list has apparently locked out Pat, so she can no longer administer it. On the other hand, the new Yahoo list seems to be working flawlessly, so we are using that to replace the Topica list. If you have not already done so, you can subscribe to the Yahoo mail list from here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/STCSanDiego/ Or from the chapter's home page: http://www.stc-sd.org/home/home.htm Once again, you do NOT need to be an STC member or even a former Topica
subscriber to subscribe to the mail list, and we will NOT disclose your
information to anyone. If you sign up for the mail list, you can expect
to receive an average of 3-4 messages from me per month. The topics
of these messages will include:
I promise you that no salesman will call, and I will not e-mail you the Deadhead joke I told before the Richard Lederer and Martha Barnette presentation in November. We really do want to ensure that we keep everyone informed, so please sign up now if you have not already done so. If you have any comments, concerns, or questions about this, please contact Pat Ray at email@stc-sd.org Chapter LibrarianDuring the summer break, Lynn Sornson, our chapter librarian, was promoted by her employer, and we all congratulate her on that achievement! However, her new position requires substantially more time and effort on her part, and she will no longer be able to attend every chapter meeting, nor administer the chapter library. We very much need someone to be the new chapter librarian. Are you one of the many folks who regularly checked out documents from the chapter library? If so, please consider stepping up and doing your part to ensure that we can continue to offer this most valuable service to your fellow members in the future by becoming our new chapter librarian. If you are interested, please contact Lynn for the details at library@stc-sd.org Spotlight Awards BanquetThe 2005-2006 STC Spotlight Awards Banquet is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2006 at the Prego Ristorante in Irvine, CA: Prego Ristorante The exact time is still to be determined. This is to celebrate all those folks who won awards for outstanding print and online documentation, and technical illustration. All local entries were judged by the Houston chapter, and we judged their entries. If you have ever enjoyed a wonderful meal at the local Prego Ristorante in Hazard Center, the menu in Irvine is exactly the same. For those of you familiar with the Orange County chapter, Prego is located next door to the Marriott (the one with the bountiful and amazing desserts) where that chapter used to hold its monthly meetings. More information about this and a registration link will be distributed soon. If you have any questions about it, please feel free to contact me. Not to sound too much like the Hair Club for Men spokesman, but in addition to being chapter president, I am also the Spotlight Awards treasurer. Vegas TipDo you plan to attend the 53rd STC Annual Conference in (Viva) Las Vegas this May? The conference will be held May 7-10 in the Paris and Bally's Hotels on the Strip, but I was able to book a room at the Barbary Coast next door for about half of what the others were charging. If you're interested, here is their Web site: http://www.barbarycoastcasinos.com/ My sincere thanks to Jeff Randolph, my Orange County Chapter counterpart, for passing this valuable tip along to me. This will be the last STC Annual Conference to be held on this side
of the Mississippi for the next four years. I hope to see you there.
