The End of a Great Year

In Gratitude

As the 2004-2005 chapter year comes to an end, I want to thank the many folks who have made this a great year for the chapter, and one that I am very proud to have been a part of. So many of you have made a point to come up and thank me after the meetings for having so many great speakers this year, for which I am truly grateful, but it was a team effort.

First off, I want to thank the council members for their dedication, compassion, and hard work. As I mentioned last month, a lot of things have to happen behind the scenes for our monthly meetings to take place, and it's only through the efforts of these folks that our meetings were the success stories they were. My thanks to Michael Cardenas for bringing in all those great speakers we've had this year, to Kimberly Hiland for handling the check-ins, paying our bills, and keeping the books balanced, to Walter Hanig for his professional development efforts, his taking care of the monthly meeting reservations, and his numerous contributions to the council, to Karen Field Carroll for doing such an excellent job of resurrecting our beloved, award-winning Signature, for her most welcome sense of humor at the council meetings, and for putting up with my many missed article deadlines, to Roberta Davidson for her taking care of the membership issues, and her friendship these many years, to Jim Guarino for bringing the job board back to every meeting, and his support, and to Eric Hurd for completely revamping the chapter website into something we can all be proud of, for maintaining it, and for his support these last ten months.

Many thanks to our volunteers, who are so efficient at what they do that we often forget their efforts are just as vital to the success of our chapter. My thanks to Lynn Sornson for maintaining the chapter library, and for hauling all those books back and forth every month, to Kitt Medrano for taking care of all the hotel arrangements, and ensuring we get a good variety in our entrees, to Sally Altman for organizing and distributing the jobmail, to Pat Ray for organizing and maintaining the chapter email list, to the many newsletter editors and proofreaders who have to review my articles every month, to Gail Van Landingham for assisting Kimberly with the meeting check-ins, and to Deborah Johnson for helping Michael out with the speaker arrangements.

My thanks to you, the chapter members, for your ongoing support, for choosing to be affiliated with the San Diego chapter even though it is now optional, and most of all for coming back to the meetings. It's good to see so many familiar faces again every month!

Some of the council members and volunteers will keep working over the summer, even though we do not hold chapter meetings in July and August. Kimberly will be filing the annual financial report, Kitt will be making the hotel arrangements for next year, Sally will continue to send out the jobmail, next year's webmaster Liana Harlan will be making occasional website updates, and the entire council will meet one Saturday or Sunday in August for our annual planning meeting. I will also be meeting with the leaders of the other nine Southern California chapters for the Leadership Forum in July. I will summarize that meeting in the September edition of Signature.

Next Year

As of this writing, we have a speaker lined up for the September chapter meeting, but the other nine months are still open. Are there any speakers you would really like to see next year? If so, please let me know by sending an email to me at president@stc-sd.org. If you find that you really have a knack for picking out speakers the chapter would enjoy, please consider volunteering for the Programs VP council position.

Many of you have contacted me about the meeting dates, and have said that you might be able to attend (more) meetings if they were not held on Wednesday nights. Would you prefer that we hold our meetings on a Tuesday or Thursday night instead? If you have strong feelings about this, please contact me at president@stc-sd.org. I do think it's best that we continue to hold our meetings during the second week of the month, so that we do not coincide with the meetings held at our neighboring chapters.

Again, many thanks to you all for a great chapter year. There's more to come, and I look forward to seeing you again in September. I hope you each have a wonderful summer.

Sincerely,
Lance-Robert
