Who's Who in the San Diego STC This Month

By Karen Field Carroll, Editor

This month we honor two long-term STC members: Jim Guarino and Beth Vollbach.

The San Diego Chapter of the STC welcomes Jim Guarino as its newest council member and Employment vice president. Like many of us, Jim took the long way around to technical communication. After graduating from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts with a bachelor's degree in English and working as a writer and editor for a few years, Jim studied accounting. After working for two companies as a bookkeeper, he reconsidered his English degree and began working as a freelance technical communicator before relocating to San Diego and landing a long-term position at Mail Boxes Etc. as its editor of operations manuals. Also like many of us, Jim was laid off when his position was eliminated in 2003. He now works as a technical writer and editor for a company that provides software for the commercial banking industry.

Please help us welcome Jim to the San Diego Council. His broad work history makes him a tremendous asset as its Employment VP.

After more than 13 years as a Signature copyeditor, STC member Beth Vollbach will move to Michigan this spring. Beth became copyeditor for this newsletter about 1991, when Bonni Graham was the editor and the newsletter itself endured monthly printings and mailings.

Beth began her career writing and editing military specifications in Michigan and is considering opportunities to write and edit military documents again when she and her husband return.

As a long-time regular contributor to Signature, I have worked with Beth for the last five years. This year she has made my transition to managing editor practically seamless by continuing to edit even as she prepares to move across the country. I am certain I speak for many when I say the San Diego membership will deeply miss Beth's sharp eye and wit to match.
